Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdistan province, is the cultural capital of Kurdistan.
With a population of around 500.000 in 2016, it is the second most populated Kurdish city in Iran. Some ancient artifacts that were found in this historic city date back to 6,000 years ago.
About 400 years ago, Sanandaj was the center of Ardalan reign, the long-lasting and the most powerful local government of Kurds throughout history.
Some very picturesque and historic monuments of the past history of this city have been preserved.
Sanandaj has a long history of peaceful coexistence with different religions, and cultural tolerance is reflected in people’s lives and customs.

The city has an area of about 2.906 km and is located in the middle of Zagros Mountains and pla

ins in western Iran.
Sanandaj is an immigrant-friendly city and most of its population are actively involved in providing services.
In addition, handicrafts, including crafting musical instruments, and in villages around the city, animal husbandry and crop production are prevalent.
The city is administered by a City Council whose members are elected by direct people’s vote and are in the office for 4 years.
The Municipality is responsible for implementing the Council’s decisions in urban management. The shared strategy of the authorities and the people is to move toward investing and development of music and its related arts. For various reasons, Sanandaj is less known globally, and its designation as a Creative City of Music will be an opportunity to introduce the city’s potentials to the world and contribute to its development.

Joining the UCCN for Sanandaj would mean great urban enhancement and the booming of local economy and social and cultural development. Music can play a key role in tourism expansion, helps the city be happy, and leads to economic and social inclusion and public participation in the process of sustainable economic and social development. Joining the UCCN would provide a unique opportunity for the city to register its traditional music heritage, preserve its local melodies and folklore, and make use of the global knowledge to enhance its rich musical heritage and flourish its art economy. Music has a deep influence on the lives, emotions and traditions of the people, especially among the many low-income and marginalized groups. Thus, using music, especially in terms of creativity and development, will create the right opportunities for the empowerment of people, especially many young, educated and interested talents, and building an inclusive and sustainable city. The municipality is working on a plan on public and private partnerships to address the infrastructure investment challenges, and inadequate advertising and marketing at the regional/ global levels.
